Slug pellets banned what to do

a1154a1154 Posts: 1,108
There is another thread on the ban, but my question is specifically what to do with them? The pellets, not the slugs! In my shared garden and GH situation (nobody else uses it, just me) there are about 6 tubs. I think all previous people must have bought some. I’ve never bought any or used them.
I’d like to get rid of these tubs, but if I throw them away couldn't they kill creatures at landfill?

@1154Think it would be best to contact your local council and take their advice on disposing of them safely.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

Your local council tip will have a section for leaving hazardous waste.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Hmm ok. My council aren’t known for being on top of things, it will probably take them a while to advise about slug pellets.
I’ve looked into asbestos and paint before now and they wouldn’t take it.

I've never seen anything at my local tip regarding disposal of slug pellets - all sorts of other hazardous waste but not that.
I'm guessing that many councils have never even thought about it and maybe wouldn't term it "hazardous" or "toxic" in the greater scheme of things.  It can be a bit surprising what some councils consider to be environmentally damaging or not.
As a last resort, is it worth contacting a manufacturer of these pellets ( if they still exist ) and explain your predicament ?

@1154 Just looked on my council web site. It tells you to take them to a recycling/waste centre and hand them to a member of staff.

  • I had bought some ages ago when I was more clueless on this stuff so I wanted to safely dispose of it. I went to the tip and asked a man working there where it should go and he took it off me and just slung it in the general waste, which I'm pretty sure you're not meant to do, so I was annoyed.

That just about confirms my suspicions re many council attitudes towards the environment as a whole :/

there's normally a " grace period " to dispose of such things after SALES are banned.
I can't see the full weight of the judicial and criminal systems coming down upon you if you carry on using them.

Yes if you have them, you can carry on using them but I thought the OP had no use for them and wanted rid ?

In which case, I'd just put them in the bin
