Slugs

With the ban on slug pellets can we still use products like Sluggo?

my understanding is the ban only applies to metaldehyde based slug pellets

But maybe time to think about stopping all the killing of anything that doesn't fit in with our plans

  • Tried that last year I had no crops left! Put beer traps, copper tape etc but they did not work. Garlic spray seemed to work for a short period but then everything smelt of garlic.

Over here, we can buy food grade salt from farmers' co-ops in quite usable bags, heavy but not too bad, at less than a tenner.  We use it to stem weed growth on the drive, but it'll also kill slugs.  It'll involve the user in 'stalking' the culprits and anointing them with a small sprinkle, as opposed to leaving pellets and walking away, but salt will certainly do the job if lizhanley1969  can source the product in her area.

I'm trying to go chemical free in the garden, and just accepting what happens. Hopefully nature will find a balance.
I don't know if it is a coincidence, but for the first time i can remember, a song thrush is now visiting my garden. I happily watch it searching for and feasting on slugs.

  • There are plenty of birds around where I live and I try to entice all birds in but there are too many cats who use my garden as their public loo ( another touchy subject) had some slow worms once but the cats got to them. I have a pond, insect house, bee homes etc to try and entice useful insects in to get a balance but it is not working, just seem to have snails and slugs. But I will keep trying to get a good balance.

I had lots of slugs and tried encouraging birds etc but 4 years ago I used nematodes. I only have a small garden and it still wasn’t cheap but it worked. 4 years on the slugs are under control still. Maybe worth a try?
  • Thank you will do.

Don’t be tempted to use them until the soil is warm. I used them on 1st May here in the West Midlands and I remember it was pouring down and I was outside watering the beds. I must have looked crazy but conditions were right and I honestly found they worked. I still have slugs but they are not a major problem.
