I purchased one of the potato planters and I've started planting other things in it... I've got broad beans (Sutton which is a dwarf variety) and beetroot on the top. I was a bit dubious about putting spuds in as they're small so I put them In a big 'potato bag planter'. I think strawberries would be better than spuds in the planter. Lidls also were selling a larger tiered planter which I'm going to use for flowers.
It'll be interesting to see just how successful they are by the end of the season. I've stuck one small seed potato in each layer as a trial, but rather imagine the tower will be used for other things henceforth.
We too got a set of these planters from Lidl and as we had a half dozen leftover Anya and Charlotte spuds in the fridge sprouting we decided to pop 3 in each layer and see what happened.
Well I can report they performed wonderfully, we used Westland peat free compost, takes a lot of keeping moist, and after the foliage had died back tipped the contents out to see what we had to harvest. The compost was literally full of clean damage free lovely perfectly formed potatoes, we didn't weigh them but I guess there were 50 in each layer. A great success that we will use again next season.
rogerhales Congratulations for perseverance. I, too, had success but at a much more minor level. I tipped one tray out early on, not expecting to find much, but did find a handful of modest tubers. I'll follow your example next year, probably with earlies, and see what happens.
