Odd camellia behaviour

My white camellia has decided to grow a single red bloom!
There is a pink one adjacent so they must of crossed or something.

Can you trace the stem of the red one right back … could it be coming from below a graft?

Is your Camellia called... Camellia japonica 'Lady Vansittart' by any chance?..

ok, in lieu of your reply, if it is this one, and it looks like it, then this Camellia is particularly unstable and 'sports' to different colour flowers readily.  Some have been propagated and sold as different Camellias..

..the flower at the top of this display, at 12 o'clock shall I say.. looks to be the same as yours... the flower to the right at 3pm, is also off the same Camellia, but it's pink with a darker pink stripe on the edge..  this one is now called 'Yours Truly'...  there are several others, probably including the pink one in your photo..

Enjoy your Camellia and all its variations..

I've just checked and the pink one is called 'Lady Vansittart Pink'... lol..

  • Hi, I am not sure what variety it is as I planted it about 15-20 years ago. It has never done this before so I just found it strange, but interestingly nice to have a single red in among the white. I followed the stem back and it only goes a few inches to a bunch of other white buds.
  • I have an identical one to this ... I recall I bought it with one solitary flower that was pink and white striped. That was several years ago and it has been slow to get flowers in any number, but this year, blooms all white (or very pale pink) with a single red bloom. I haven't done yet, but should do as suggested and track back the stem of that to see if it it separate
No-one knows if you have done your house-work, but everyone knows is you haven't done your gardening
