I'd normally completely agree with you @Fairygirl that they don't like sunny conditions but our next door neighbours had one in a south facing position against a really sunny wall and it grew fantastically well until they cut it down. It covered most of the garage in maybe 5-6 years which is far far quicker growing than our one that faces northeast. We planted one in a south position (but it backs onto a shed so only gets direct sun from mid afternoon to sunset in the summer) and it's doing really well as well. So I think they can take full sun but only if they have the right soil at their roots and they don't dry out. They are so good for a shady spot though and there are more showy things that like the sun.
They can cope with sun, as long as they have their feet right - we can easily grow them here in that aspect, but they're best in shade, and yes - so many other things that won't grow so well there, so it's a bit of a waste using them in a sunny site! I'd never normally suggest growing them in sunny sites, simply because they don't always do well, and they need the right care to get them going, so for anyone who isn't experienced, there's better plants to have.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
