white flakes in soil

Wonder if anyone's encountered this? I have a large planter and grew lettuces there last year in new compost. This year the soil is full of white bits, sort of flaky, which seem soft when you pick them up. My gardener thinks it might be some kind of fungus, but I'm wary of planting anything new in the soil until I know what it is, and whether I should just remove all the compost and start again. Any thoughts, please?

If the compost has bark in, it is just fungus rotting the wood. It will be fine.

I'd agree with @fidgetbones. It's pretty standard to have bits of wood in composts, and the fungus is simply there because those bits are just not properly broken down yet .
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Thanks so much @fidgetbones and @Fairygirl. Hopefully that's all it is! I think I'll take a chance and grow my tomatoes in it and hope for the best!
