Can anyone identify this plant?

Hi all,

So on my walk with the dogs I have come across the attached.

Does anyone know what it is, whether its a weed etc?

I quite like the bushy form and flowers and wondering whether I can take a cutting without it being invasive.

Thanks all in advance.

That’s periwinkle… depending on the size it’s either Vinca minor or major.
It’s very easy to propagate from layering shoots … but it can become a thug … especially V. major … we have it here (it was here before we arrived) and is useful groundcover in dry spots under trees, but we have to keep in top of it, cutting it hard back at least once a year. It sends out long whippy growths which take root, so you have to be careful of catching your foot in it and tripping …. but it is beautiful … it’s under the tree at the back of our garden and I can see those pretty sky blue flowers when I stand at the sink and they make me smile 😊

Looks like vinca major which is useful as ground cover in awkward spots but can be a thug if it gets too happy.

  • It looks like periwinkle of some sort to me. It spreads quite a bit, I have a variegated one that has taken over a large area and I need to cut it back and I am not looking forward to digging out the roots.

Vinca major has tiny hairs on the edge of the leaves.
    Vinca minor has none.
From the leaf shape I would say it is Vinca minor.

Vinca minor left. Vinca Major right.

Vinca major top. Vinca minor below

    Hairs on Vinca major.
