Old Dahlia Tubers

The good news is that last year's tubers survived the winter. The question is how do I replant them in pots. They are solid and dry with no shoots yet, do I just replant them in pots and keep in my shed (no greenhouse) and ? do I add any water (mixed opinions with no roots or shoots) or do I just cover with a little compost until shoots appear and then replant them in which case do I add a little water to encourage the tubers to produce new shoots. Presumably I should keep the pots in the shed until risk of frost has gone.

    You should definitely have them in compost/soil, now that Spring is here. Yes, keep them away from frost. (garage/shed). It's good to add a little water the soil, so the tubers dry out, but don't soak them yet. If it's particularly warm where you are storing them, then you may need to give a little water every few days.

    Once the shoots appear, it's best to move them somewhere where there is light, as well as protection from frosts. You can then start thinking about a liquid feed every week or so, and increase the watering. I'm in the South, we won't put the pots outside until around May/ early June, when risk of frost has passed.

    Mine are in a trug covered with multi-purpose compost straight from the bag ... not really damp but not dry either.  They're in our studio by the big window, so protected from frost but not really warm either ... hopefully shoots will start appearing before too long ... when that happens I'll pot them up but keep them inside (at least at night) until June.

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    I am starting to pot mine up today.
    They will go into a cold g/h, in barely damp compost and will not be watered again until shoots appear.
    It's a big job, I have over 60 tubers.

    mine ( 87 ) were potted up in barely damp compost about 2 weeks ago and are in the unheated polytunnel. More appearing every day, but I've not watered any of them yet
