Unhappy rhododendron?
Planted this rhododendron last year, it's in a shadyish position and doesn't seem to be happy or growing... Any advice or ideas?

You need a soil based medium , not compost, although you can add that too to get good drainage. Compost on it's own won't sustain a shrub for more than a few months. You'll need to be vigilant with it's care - watering especially.
If it was only planted last year it'll just be getting established, so it wouldn't have grown that much anyway unless it had very good conditions

Sometimes people will say a plant's in a large pot, but what they call large is often not the case

That's where my 'japanese' garden is now.
It's got flower buds growing so it'll be in bloom soon.
Looks all good to me.
If you only planted it last year the first thing it'll do is concentrate on producing a strong root system. Once it's got that, it will start growing above the soil. Just needs a bit of time
