That's going to look fabulous in a week or so when the rest of the flowers open :) .
I didn’t expect it to be so big. I may need to rethink the ones I’ve put in my new bed!

This is the current size of it…..

I stood next to it for scale. I don’t have a cake for a head; cake for brains perhaps. 😂

Mr Cakehead, that is one mega lupin!  I didn't know they got so big, I'd have said it must be more than one plant if I didn't know better.
  • Wowzers! Have they got any support or standing on their own?

It certainly looks like many plants. I swear it’s just one. Maybe I should neglect all of my plants.

I’ve done NOTHING to it since I popped it in the ground last autumn. No food, no water, no support.  It even went into compacted clay soil which has been covered over with membrane and gravel for at least the last 6 years.

@TheGreenMan that is a Super lupin. Very nice.
I too planted one last spring in a newly created bed. It has now taken over the entire bed, eclipsing all the other perennials I had carefully planted.

Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth :)

That is very impressive. I did the same as you, plonked a lupin in the shade in poor clay soil, and it's got a few flower heads but nothing like yours. Is it in full sun?
Also managed to propagate from some seeds last year (maybe that drained them of energy for this year's display) but sadly those died on the windowsill after pricking out. Will just leave them to do their own thing this year.

I'm loving the early colour from my lupins (they're pretty much the same as the pic @Eustace posted). I never would have bought them out of choice, but they came as an unexpected freebie in spring of last year - a bunch of bare roots thrown in free with an online order.  I stuck them in the ground in a sunny but very dry patch (under a towering eucalyptus that sucks the ground dry) and they're thriving.  Never thought I'd be so pleased with them. I've got penstemons growing through them, which looks quite good.

My lupins were fab at my last house! Had some giants, and lovely colours and they were self seeding.
My new plot…next door neighbour laughed when I put lupins in. He was right, they disappeared overnight. It’s only a few miles away. I guess it’s sluggy wonderland.
