I have just bought a young clematis plant Hagley Hybrid in a pot. It has about 12 inches of new growth. Looking ahead at the weather forecast would it be best to leave it in its pot either in a sheltered place or in cold greenhouse rather than plant out?

Besides, you'd want to prune it a bit anyway so nature would be doing it for you!

Many plants sold, especially in supermarkets etc, are very young -little more than last year's cuttings, and benefit from being grown on for a while to ensure they're strong enough to withstand slugs and other problems. A plant with a good root system will do better.
No need for them to be indoors though @pandakoalagirl49lS9c8QR_ Outside in a sheltered spot is all they need, if you've bought them from an outlet where they've been kept inside long term.

I would keep it in a sheltered spot and feed and water it then, the minute I see a root at the bottom, pot it on in to a deeper pot with good JI3 type compost. Keep an eye on it and plant it out next autumn or spring.
I've had some from Morrisons in the past too- good healthy plants, but they were all grown on for a good while, until the planting areas were prepped [nothing here at the time] and then they were nice and sturdy, and well developed, and ready to go.
