Seedlings advice

slkimberslkimber Posts: 2
Hi I am new at this allotment malarkey and so do not have a polytunnel or greenhouse so growing seedlings indoors. Have I started off my French beans and peas too soon? Can they be planted out under fleece now? Or do I repot and keep them indoors for a few more weeks  thanks  Allotment Annie.

I'd say that the peas are fine, harden them off then plant them outside.

The beans, however, are early. I'd resow in late April/early May unless they're bush beans going into a container.

I never start peas off indoors as I find they are fairly hardy, I have just sown my first ones outside last week. I would start to harden yours off outside during the day/bringing them in at night (as it’s due to be cold this week) then plant them out. As for your French beans I would say you have started these off too early, I won’t start mine for about a month yet as they really don’t like the cold, so you could try potting them up but they will be fairly big by the time the weather allows you to put them out.
I have no greenhouse/poly tunnel so my rule of thumb for my veggies is not to start any off indoors unless it’s my tomatoes/chillies or cucumbers (plants that need warmth) at the end of March. Everything else gets started off outside in the cold frame or direct sown from April onwards (I did chance some salads last week as weather was so nice). If it won’t germinate/grow outside then it’s too early for me.
  • Plant the peas outside - you can always cover with fleece till they get established.
Sow French Beans after the last frosts.
