Growing container potatoes in compost or topsoil

Hi guys when planting seed potatoes in containers can you do a mix of topsoil and bagged multi-purpose compost? I have done it previously with multi-purpose compost only but this can end up being expensive as I have tonnes of good quality top soil. If so what split would you suggest eg 50% topsoil 50% multi-purpose bagged compost? Thanks in advance!

    I am growing ours in sacks with a mix of free council soil improver, spent compost and fresh.

    I can't see that it would be a problem, bearing in mind how they're grown in the ground  :)

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    Thanks @Fairygirl … I’ve done this in the past and had good results from an approximate 50:50 mix of topsoil and MPC.
