I think as far as the roots are concerned, you will be fine as long as the soil was warm when you planted it. If the frost lifts the soil just firm it back gently. What type of salix is it ?
If they are growing already and the shoots look tender, you could always fleece them or lay newspapers over the top of them . However Salix and hydrangeas are generally hardy. Hydrangea shoots are more tender but usually if they get frosted they recover and flower later.
@gwenjobs Hopefully you haven't dead headed your Hydranga. The old flowers protect the new buds .I did dead head one years ago it was too early and it didn't flower.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
