What is digging up our mossy lawn?

Does anyone have any idea what might be doing this (see pic below) to our lawn?  The holes are quite deep and very precise but only a few inches in diameter, so far mostly on the mossy bank area of our lawn - Badgers? Squirrels? Anything else?  It has just started a few weeks ago and getting worse.  Many thanks

probably bird looking for food/nesting material. Mossy lawns are great for wildlife

Thanks, I think it must be Badgers as the holes are quite deep and the moss/thatch is left behind.  It would need to be a very big bird to be doing that!  Does anyone have any tips on how to deter them at all?

It doesn't look "bad" enough to be badgers. I think it is the birds wanting the moss for their nests. Our blackbirds and sparrows always turn up the mossy parts and leave bare areas.

Partridges or possibly pheasants have been doing similar in my grass. They seem to dig up the celandine?

I too think badgers would make more disturbance. They tend to tear up clods of earth and grass

I'd say badgers as well. I've seen the same on our lawn, especially under the bird feeders. In fact I caught it on the trail cam recently.

I play with plants and soil and sometimes it's successful

I've seen those smooth snout marks, usually with the hole in the centre which the earthworm emerged from!
