Polystichum setiferum is a good evergreen fern. I grow S Caradonna in full sun never tried it in a shadier spot. Think you will need to empty the planters regularly as said if you want anything to do well.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

I should have said - the growing medium is important. You can't just fill the planters with compost ,because it won't sutain the plants for very long. You'll need a soil based medium - one of the John Innes mixes. Drainage is important too regardless of the plants, especially for any of the ones which need that. The containers could be quite moist over winter    :)
I have S. caradonna in a west facing bed, and it isn't in full sun all the time because of other planting, so it should be ok, even if it isn't as floriferous.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

That's good advice, thank you. Should I mix in some grit to help drainage then?

If you're choosing the salvia, that will be beneficial. You may need to water a fair bit through summer or any long dry spells though. Containers can dry out very quickly, even if you get rain, so you'd need to keep checking them  :)
