Well, I went to the GC and chose 4. I bought 2 Darrow and 2 Blue Crop. Two reasons. The recommendations given on this thread and because Blue Crop is slightly later than Darrow so my fruiting season should spin out a little. I know that I like Blue Crop and Darrow is reported as being a good cropper and sweet.
I've decided to plant them in a small raised bed that I can utilise. I think the soil is ok, neutral to slightly acid here but I'll do a test before I plant them and plant them in ericaceous compost if needed.
I've noted that they would benefit from the odd ericaceous feed and that they like lots of water.
A wedding anniversary present to myself as I know he would have bought them for me.
Thanks all for your information and advice, as a newcomer to growing them I appreciate it.
I think you will need to plant in ericaceous compost. Also use azalea feed (I use Miracle Grow for Azaleas once a month from March-Sept) and use rainwater if poss (unless your tap water is naturally soft)
The soil here is slightly acid (around pH 6.7) and they won't grow in it. Blueberries like it very acid pH 4.5 to 5.5 The pH scale is logarithmic so pH 4.5 is 10x more acid than pH 5.5
And Happy Anniversary too - in a few months you can make a blueberry anniversary cake

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
Ok will do Pete.8. No problems with tap water as it comes off the hill and nothing is added. I didn't know that re the soil testing. Yes hopefully a blueberry cake. They all have flowers on so fingers crossed. Only me to eat it though sadly.
