I also thought of a Robinia - in standard form.  Any thoughts?  Negative or otherwise.

I don't think I'd plant it in the ground - it's on the "sometimes susceptible" list.  I don't have any experience of growing it in a pot, I'm afraid.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

We planted last year 3 japanese maples in pots and today they are looking brilliant outside above our "bulb" area. We have protected the pots during the winter and today they all are "glowing".

    Many thanks, Liriodendrum.

and to Bertrand-mabel:  how tall are your three Japanese maples?  Will you be leaving them in pots - or at some stage planting them out?

I had pittosporum (I think Silver Queen) in a pot and it did really well.  I didn't prune out the lower branches until I planted it out, some years later, in the garden where it is now a multi-stemmed tree.  It has lovely soft evergreen foliage and tiny fragrant flowers in spring.
Gardening in East Suffolk on dry sandy soil.

Thank you, DidyW.  Pittisporum one of my favourites.  That's a really good suggestion.
