Hi would a bleeding heart grow in shade? It is along a fence border, west facing, alkaline soil.
Anyone had any success with this?
Thank you.

Dicentras [I assume that's what you mean] are shade loving plants so it will be fine  :)

It has a new name which I can never remember, but most people still use the old name - much easier!
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Yes thats what I mean! Would a fuchsia work in full shade?

I think most fuchsias are perfectly fine in shade, and many people actively use them for awkward shady spots.
I don't grow them, although I used to have one of the hardy ones in a previous garden, and they're certainly fine.  :)

I've just noticed you said your soil is alkaline, so just check that the pH is ok for both. I have neutral to acidic soil, and both are certainly fine in that.  :)

I grew both of them in shade and alkali soil at my old house.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

I have a bleeding heart in a pot that's never seen direct sun and it does just fine. Fuchsia should be fine too, I have them in full sun and full shade and they all do well.
  • Thank you all! Slowly getting there with planning my shady border!

Don't let shade worry you @sharanshrubs. There's loads of plants which are excellent in shade, whether it's perennials, shrubs, trees or bulbs.
As long as they suit your soil and conditions you won't be short of choices   :)
