Help! What has happened to our Western Red Cedar hedge?

Hi all,

We are in northern England and planted a Western Red Cedar hedge in March last year. After one year, most of the plants are doing well and putting on lots of new growth. However, one has completely died and another one is pretty much the same size as last year. Both have had this happen to their trunks, where it appears the trunk has split away. A few of the plants which are doing well have this as well and don't seem to be affected by it.

My questions...

  1. What could have caused this? Is it over/underwatering? Frost?

  2. Is this something that will affect the plant, as in make it more susceptible to disease, later on? If so, am I better off replacing the affected plants now while they're still small/cheap?

I've had a quick look online but no joy. Any advice from more experienced gardeners gratefully received!

Hi, I don’t really have an answer for you in terms of cause, although I have seen the same thing on mature oak trees in my garden and it must have happened when the trees were quite young. By just responding to you it will bump you post up to the top of the list and hopefully someone with more useful info will respond 😊
