Black marks on leaves of rhododendron

Hi, I have an old rhododendron that flowered beautifully last year but now has black marks on the top side of the leaves (the marks seem to scratch off with my nail). I can't make my mind up if this might be sooty mold or a fungal disease. Anyone any advice?

    Sooty mould by the look of it.

    You may have scale insect or similar, and that needs treated to prevent the problem. Sometimes these things happen if a plant is stressed in some way. 
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....



    I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
