Frogspawn in a bucket

Hi, will frogspawn survive in a bucket? We’ve got some in the pond for the first time and want to save some from the hungry fish! I plan to return the froglets once they are big enough

    Depends how big the bucket is really but it's not ideal. The jellied mass will quickly spoil the water and then you have the problem of hundreds of hungry mouths with nothing to feed on, they also have a cannibalistic stage.
    It might sound bad but they are probably better in the pond with the fish and if you increase the amount of cover they have you would likely see more little frog let's make it. If you go for the bucket then add some plant material before they hatch to kick start the ecosystem and only keep a small amount of tadpoles in there unless it's massive. It is possible to raise them this way but it takes more effort than letting nature take its course.

    What sort of fish? My goldfish never touch frog spawn, it's the newts that eat it.

    Just 4 Shubunkin, but they’ve not been fed over winter so will be on the lookout for anything tasty!

    I had a pond with lots of fish in and there was never a shortage of frogspawn.

    Very few make it to froglet stage anyway. All sorts of things eat them when they're tadpoles - birds of all kinds are very particular to them. They're easy prey as froglets too.
    The fish didn't really eat them when I had them either [koi and golden orfe] but it was a very big pond. Even the sticklebacks that appeared in other ponds I've had [from plants] didn't eat them.  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
