What is this plant? Is it a weed?

    It is a lesser celandine a weed to most gardeners. If you dig it up remove the tiny bulbils on the roots. There are people who collect these plants especially the doubles that do not seed as well and the dark leaved ones such as C Brazen Hussy
    I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

    It's Lesser celandine (Ficaria verna subsp. verna).  Very pretty at this time of year but it can be a bit of a nuisance in a garden as it has persistant mini tubers underground and spreads.

    Nice leaf to it though. Usually they are pure green rather than speckled like that.

    @Palustris Yes the fact that it does have a speckled leaf would indicate that perhaps a green form has crossed with a darker one, always a chance it might be a single orange.  

    Saw Brazen Hussey for sale at local GC today but there were no takers, probably because it can become invasive in clay soils. It is better growing in Great Dixter meadows.
    There are some absolute treasures mostly doubles, without flowers it is impossible to tell, the singles tend to bully them out . I do still grow B Hussey with Crocosmia, as the Crocosmia appears the hussy goes.

    Hello everyone. Thank you for your help. I've found Gardeners World has a page on it, and the description of the location is perfect. Only 9 months ago the garden was lawn, and it has only appeared in this 'new' flower beds in last month or so, by a fence under tree canopy. See what flower appears. Think will leave where is as good for wildlife and in a back of garden bed.
