Scaffolding net is about £30-35 for 50 metres. I'm sure it'll stop slugs, and as the 'holes' are bigger it wouldn't filter out as much light as tulle. But if a bird traps its claws in the holes would it be able to break free? If used as a collar around plants would a slug or snail walk/glide over the netting to get to the plant?
Normal garden netting is about £7 for 10 metres where holes are bigger and not a deterrent for slugs. I've read of incidents where birds have been caught and died in the netting, but is this big enough problem to be an issue?
I had to rescue a young blue tit caught in netting at the allotment last year, not my plot I hasten to add. Not a pleasant experience I doubt it would have survived much longer and it seemed a hard way to die.

Experiments are needed I think. Thanks @Fire
