garden lawn

hi. 
im having trouble with my garden my grass dies all the time come start of January. 
in the wet season its so boggy and when its dry it goes into ball shape and crumbles. 

i have put soak aways in to help but seems to of made it worse or is having no effect

    It looks very shady, which doesn't help.
    Poorly drained soil isn't great for grass either- it doesn't like boggy ground. Do you get moss?
     
    It sounds like the soil needs to be improved before you try seeding, or turfing, again. If it's clay [sounds quite possible] you need more organic matter added to it- rotted manure is ideal. It helps break up poorly draining soil, but helps retain moisture in dry spells.
    Then you'd need to follow the right procedure before seeding, or turfing, and you need a type which suits your site and climate/conditions. Then it needs the right care until established.
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
