Can you hard prune a Clematis macropetala and if so, when?

Like many people I need to replace my fence.  I’ve managed to detach the nearly rotten trellis with the clematis on and prop it up while the fence behind is renewed.  If it survives the digging for a new post at it’s roots, I’m wondering how to proceed. I am hoping I will be able to re-attach it to a new trellis but is there any chance that it will regrow from the roots if I need to cut it down?  It usually looks so lovely when it flowers at the beginning of April, I feel so sorry for it!

Yes. Ideally do it after it's flowered, so that you get the benefit, although if the fence is rotten, it might be better to just do it just now. You might get some later flowers anyway  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
