raising lawn level

Hi, I have just scarified my lawn, the surface of which is not particularly even and in most places about 40mm - 50mm lower than I actually want. I want to raise it by that much so it is level with my patio

I am thinking I just get in some top soil and a roller and get it level and at the right height.. then rake and over seed.

I am looking to get the topsoil on and rolled by next weekend.

I am then going on holiday for 3 weeks!

A couple of questions

1) will the existing grass grow back through 40mm - 50mm topsoil?  i.e. do I just need to over seed or completely reseed

2) should I let it all settle while I am away for 3 weeks, and then rake again and seed when I get back? or should I seed before going away?

If anyone has different ideas please let me know

1 - probably not at that depth
2 - you can certainly get the soil ready, but wait until you come back to seed.
Unless you're in an area with regular moisture, the seed will just sit there, or get eaten, or blow away.
If you're raising it several inches, have you got a suitable edging for it?
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks for the reply, noted.

Yes I have brick edging which will be high enough, if not I will redo that as well!

Just trying to figure out how much topsoil I need

If you look on sites that sell it, there's usually a calculator, which makes life easier  ;)
