Zen style garden in troughs

Has anyone got or ever seen a Zen style garden laid out in a trough?

I have three kitchen sink sized troughs that I'd like to use to build a Zen garden, the ones with circles raked in the gravel. I can see that large Zen gardens use a white or light coloured gravel but I wasn't sure if I could get anything like this but in a much finer grit size, more suitable for use in the troughs.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Aquarium gravel is usually finer and you might be able to rake that into patterns in a container, otherwise white sand?
