Recommendation for secateurs please?

Hello everyone,

My brother has asked for some heavy duty/good quality secateurs. I have had a look and Felco look good, but then I saw a thread on here with issues. Can anyone suggest a good pair please? He had a mature garden and is right handed. Thank you.

    I've been using Felco for 40 years now and the only problem I've had is their condition when they've been lost in the compost heap for 6 months.  Not good.  Luckily, Felco offer a complete overhaul service for £25 last time I used it.

    They also sell spare parts so can last a long time.  Even better if they are kept clean and oiled and occasionally sharpened.

    Obelixx can you tell me if the spring in between the handles has ever dropped out of yours please?

    Yes, once, but I found it and replaced it.  You can get new ones if needed.  An occasional squirt of WD40 helps keep them springy and tight.

    In that case contact Felco UK and ask them if it's a known problem or if you just have a faulty spring.  They should offer to replace it.

    I love my Felcos. I have several, the oldest is over 40. I like no. 2 best. I lost a pair which turned up in the garden over a year later with only a little rust. I had to change the spring on a no. 4 once.

    I agree; buy Felco.  I have No 8s which seem to suit my hands best.  I also lost a pair in the compost heap once  Obelixx (and found them a year later).  The refurbishment service is brilliant...they came back almost as new.  I have lost springs from other types of secateurs but never Felco, and I have been using them for 30 years or so.

    I have Felco no2 , must have had them over 30 years. A lot of people rate the Japanese Okatsune or Niwaki ones, it's  a good idea to go to a reputable outlet, and handle them as a lot is down to personal preference.

    Just to add both the above got best buy recommended by Garden Which. The Which article cautions about many cheaper brands look similar but the performance does not match up, to the top quality ones.
