Johnsons blue geranium -grass growing through

My plant is just showing new growth but lots of grass growing through it. Is there an easy way of removing this or should I dig up the whole clump, too late to do this?

It's easier to pick it out now before the foliage grows on the geranium.

Personally l would lift the clump and see how easy it is to extract the grass. If the clump is big enough, you could use this excuse to divide it in order to get more plants.

I agree with AnniD, that's what I would do. It won't harm the plant at this early stage.

I agree too, lift, split if necessary to get the grass roots out, as soon as possible before it grows much more.

I lift and split hardy geraniums at this time of year ... so I agree, lift, tease out the grass roots etc, even washing the roots if necessary ... split the clump as well if they've been planted a couple of years or more ... each division will double/triple in size by the end of the year.

Yep lift it and disentangle the grass from the roots. If it's a mature plant it will probably naturally fall apart into several thick-rooted crowns.

Thank you everyone. If I lift and split will it still flower well?

I would say yes. Obviously it depends how big the new clumps are, but l find that they seem to get a new lease of life  :)

Possibly even better than before … it’ll rejuvenate the clumps. 😊
