Swallows again

I asked about access for swallows in outbuildings a while ago and have now arranged for someone to make a hole in the garage wall which I'm hoping they will use - previously kept doors open but had a rat move in.
I have read that the hole needs to be a minium size but does anyone know if it has to be a certain shape - round or rectangular etc?
Thanks.

When you see swallows flying in and out of buildings they do seem to go through a rectangle opening. Not sure if that is what they prefer or that is what is available.

We're normally told by ecologists that we can leave a brick out of a wall for swallow access. A missing brick leaves a hole 235mm wide and 75mm high. Make sure the hole is well away from anywhere that a cat could sit. On some projects we've fitted a metal tray that covers the sides and base of the hole with the base part being steeply sloped outwards. This helps to stop non-flying animals jumping up and using the hole.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Thanks for reply. We have decided to go for a brick sized rectangle.
Great idea about the tray. I do hope they use it. We love them coming every summer.
