Hostas, advice needed please

ErgatesErgates Posts: 2,953
These are my two Hostas last summer

This is the variety

This is what they look like now. There are what look like shoots at the centre, but other green things that look rather like roots.

Unfortunately, the local squirrels are prone to digging round the edges of the pots. One squirrel likes to roll on its back in the compost.
Can anyone, ( @Hostafan1 ? ) advise on whether the plants look normal for this time of year? I am wondering whether the best course of action would be to top up the compost, and maybe cover the top with some slate clippings to deter the wildlife. Is there any danger that the plants are already getting pot bound? They are in larger pots than the first picture.
Thanks in anticipation.

Don't put slate on them - just a nice home for slugs....
You could put a thin layer of compost on if you want.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thank you all, that’s a great relief! I thought they might all be ruined, and these are the first Hostas I’ve managed to keep from being eaten by slugs. Thanks for the comments about the slate, hadn’t thought of that.
I must try and get a picture of the squirrel some time. It lies inside the pot and pushes itself round the perimeter on its side. Quite bizarre. It’s like a chinchilla in a sand bath, if you’ve ever seen that.
