Thank you @Marlorena and @edhelka for the the beautiful photographic inspiration! And to everyone with ideas. @AnniD I do have hazel poles in a sunnier part of the garden which I use for a pottager style border, sweet peas, beans, that sort of thing, so this is something a bit more structured, but I like your idea of allowing the plants to scramble a bit through the other planting too @Fairygirl.
I may go for an earlier flowering clematis, perhaps a macropetala, but I did like the idea of the rose and clematis flowering together at some point, although I don’t know if that will be possible. And it would be great if the the rose could provide some later summer interest as this border looses it lustre a bit after mid summer.
Then, there’s always the option of putting the obelisk somewhere else, and doing something entirely different in the part shade border! Decisions, decisions…. 😊
The decisions are always the hardest bit @jennyfleur Perhaps you could introduce some other planting for your summer colour instead, and pick another spot for your obelisk, as you were considering. The obelisk would be a nice feature, and if you have a spot where you'll see it regularly, that's a good option. It depends on what else you have in the garden as well. The macropetalas appreciate a slightly drier soil than the big flowering clematis, or a well drained one anyway, so they work really well in among other plants, especially if you're in a wetter area.
Only you can make the decisions though.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Ah, @Fairygirl, I didn’t know that about macropetela, so thinking again about the later flowering ones again. I’ll let you know when I’ve decided on my plan, and thank you again! 😊
