DA rose ‘Claire Austin’ for North Facing Fence

Morning everyone.  I have a very boring 6’ high x 20’ long, north facing fence.  There are no overhanging trees, shrubs or buildings and it is very light shade.

DA recommends Claire Austin as a climber suitable for growing in shady, cool conditions on a north-facing wall.

Has anyone done this and has it grown successfully?  Suggestions for climbing or shrub roses for this situation would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

That’s a lot of fence! Maybe a vigorous rambler instead?
  • A mixture of climbing varieties would look great.
  • @debs64 @Joyce Goldenlily.  Thank you both for quick response. Debs, sorry, I should have made it clearer.  I already have a climber at the bottom end of the fence that gets a little more sun.  I only want this one to cover maybe 2 of the 6’ panels.  It’s more the suitability of Claire Austin in that situation, or indeed any climber that would be happy in that setting.
  •  I think any climbers would be happy.
I do not envy you the pruning to keep them all trained and under control!

I know Joyce…. I just can’t stand a bare fence and I always need more roses in the garden!  I’ve got New Dawn down the brighter end and Claire Austin will go in shadier end.  Wish me luck!

I do wish you luck Allyblue eyes but I think it will be fine.

A couple of years ago I wanted climbing roses to go on each side of the front door so I chose Gertrude Jekyll for the colour, form, and smell. The house faces NNE but was assured that they would be fine so I ordered them.

When they arrived they each had 2 or 3 flowers on which was lovely so I planted them and by the next day the flowers faced towards the white cottage wall and as each flower came out they did that all summer. By autumn I was sorely tempted to move them to the back of the house but then decided to see what happened the next year.

Last year they grew and bloomed beautifully and every rose faced the way it should do so the moral of my story was don't give up Uff until you are certain that all is lost or summat like that.

I think the Claire Austin will be fine and light shade no problem. I find it's quite a vigorous rose with flexible long canes so will be easy to train horizontally across two fence panels.

  • @Uff @Lizzie27.   What lovely, reassuring posts, thank you both.  She’s going in as soon as she arrives in a day or two so fingers crossed 🤞🏻.  I’m always excited waiting for roses to arrive but confess to being a tad more so with CA 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Allyblueeyes, it's a lovely, lovely rose. Incurving creamy white blooms with pale lemon centres and slightly fraganced - may be stronger where you are, it's often windy here.

    Enjoy.

Thank you Lizzie.  I’m in Hertfordshire and our garden is very sheltered.  Here’s hoping! 🤞🏻 😊
