  • Fairy Girl I have a lot of trees in pots so I'm very aware of drying out. They are not. I can tell by how long it takes the water to start running out and with the amount of rain we've h ad this winter it would be impossible. More likely to be drowned. The leaves are strong, shiny and very healthy- just no buds. It was only last year he repotted them so maybe this year may be better.

Ah - that's fine @norderhove, re the watering. It's one of those things I thought to ask, because it's such a common problem. Sounds like it could be more likely to be the opposite. While they don't like to dry out, they also need adequate drainage.
It's certainly very odd , but maybe the repotting will make a difference. They don't need much in the way of food as long as they have the right growing medium, so it's maybe been a bridge too far if they haven't had a decent soil mix until last year.
Maybe you just need to have a good look at them at some point if you don't see any buds forming this year, just to check that the drainage holes aren't blocking or anything like that.
The sun isn't likely to be causing too big a problem, because, although they're like many other similar shrubs  [ rhodos/azaleas etc ] in that they're basically woodland plants, with the altitude you have, it's unlikely to be scorching for long periods. Wind would be more of a problem than sun, if anything.

Keep us updated if there's any change @norderhove, and if you get a chance to do some pix, that would be great too.

Best of luck with your surgery too  :)
