There has been a J. C. van Tol holly growing at the front of my house since we moved here, nearly 40 years ago ago. It is planted on top of the retaining wall, built when a flat yard area was carved out of the sloping hillside.
I have never pruned it except for Christmas greenery and it has grown into a shapely tree of moderate height. The wall is undamaged and there are no invading seedlings and there have been only a couple from the wild holly in my woodland area, which is much taller.
