What's wrong with my maple tree :(
Location: northern California
Bought a small, potted maple tree last summer and the leaves fell off around fall/winter. We stopped watering after the leaves fell off and we had occasional rain in winter. Recently, I noticed most of the small branches turned grey (I think they're dead) so I trimmed them off. The tree isn't leaving out but it's already spring in California (mid 60s during the day). What's wrong with my tree? The trunk and the bigger branches are still green...I assume the tree is still alive?

If so, they really need a site that's in dappled shade, and with regular moisture, as well as good drainage. Your climate may not be the best for it. They also need a suitable soil medium to grow in - not just compost, although as it's a new plant to you, that won't matter too much just now.
Grey stems or branches generally mean that there's no life, but if you can get it into some cooler shade, it may come away.
If it's any consolation, Acers here are only just starting to show new life after the bulk of winter, although regions further south than me may be further ahead.
A photo would help too if you can manage one
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
