@bertrand-mabel- if you're constantly covering bare soil with sterile materials -carpets etc, that won't benefit the soil at all, and actually helps to make it more sterile and stale. Organic material of any kind is better, but especially rotted manure and leaf mould. Home made compost doesn't have nutrition as such, as it's also a soil conditioner. If you have weeds in the compost, it isn't composted well enough, or you need to avoid putting any perennial or viable weeds in the bin. I never do, because I can't generate enough heat in mine to kill them off
It also doesn't change the soil as such- it's still clay, but it makes it usable, and better for all plants. I've never gardened on anything else, but improving it is what makes the difference
