Raised beds have been in existence over here since at least medieval times and, in some cultures, they go back a few thousand years BCE.

As my soil is a fertile, friable loam with good additions in the past of organic matter, I just piled the soil in when I made my beds and top them up with a good layer of compost or manure in the off season. If you want a tailored mix, this is the RHS advice “A good general soil mix can be made by combining 3 parts organic matter and 2 parts sharp sand to 7 parts topsoil”

Thank you @Allotment Boy  this has explained things alot
    for me, thank you.

@nick615  Yes I have my reasons for wanting a raised bed
a modern fad is definitely not one of them.

Thank you @p@purplerallim for all the information. I must
remember no feeding for root crops.

    Thank you @fairygirl , @wargarden572 , @bencotto for
    all the information.

Thank you everyone for your input, this had helped a lot and put me on the right
track so thank you all. :)
  • I have used one for the last two years with success. I used  soil from my garden plus a top up from my compost bin. I have managed to grow 'carrot fly' free carrots the first year but not so good last year.
