Mine always looks rough as well @JennyJ. I had to move it last year so it was hacked back to the ankles. Fine now, but there's some of the usual winter damage which will get removed later on. Last year was the first time I'd ever seen them get to flowering stage -on other people's plants [mine had already been cut back] and I assume it was simply because of the weather we had. The buds usually rot before they get to flowering stage which is always a bit disappointing.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Mine flowers most years. It's only missed years when I've cut the whole lot back hard. Different conditions I suppose - your growing season is (usually) shorter and wetter than ours.
There's usually a slew of "What's wrong with my Fatsia?" queries on here in spring - maybe they'll find this thread. If I remember I'll take some before and after photos this year.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
Yes - by the time they're at the point of flowering here, they get the full force of our wet stuff @JennyJ Just how it is. It would be nice to have the flowers, but it's the foliage I mainly grow it for. I had a good sized one for years in a previous garden, but it never flowered. I never had to cut it back much - it was in a slightly more protected spot in that garden.
