Birds nest - new or old

I am needing to clear some ivy from our neighbours garage roof and our fence so we can get the fence replaced, but when I started yesterday I found this:

Is there anyway to tell if it’s a new or old nest? I’ve stopped clearing until I can figure it out

That looks to me like an old blackbirds' nest. ... not a current year's one.  A new nest will be much neater and have a more pronounced 'cup'.
They don't return to the nest the following year so I would be happy removing that ... but get that ivy down quickly as that site may well attract other birds prospecting for nest sites.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

Perfect, that’s why I’d started this weekend! I’m not sure it’ll be as attractive a site now the ivy is dead, but I still wanted to get the top off before anything made a home!
