Anything to worry about?

Spotted this on the ivy in my garden I’ll preface this with; our neighbour poisoned the ivy before we moved in, and we’re getting rid of it (thankfully given the actions of the neighbour 😆)

I spotted these red spots, I wanted to check what they were in case I need to be careful handling those areas, to dispose of it differently or be concerned that it could spread to other plants

It looks a bit like gummosis but I thought that only affected fruit trees. I could be wrong on both counts though.

I must be honest, l have no idea. If you don't get any definite identification on here, l would use gloves when you remove it and wear long sleeves etc. I wouldn't put it in with green waste or a compost bin.

  • I think gummosis can occur on other plants apart from fruit trees (although certainly most common on them). But I'm not sure I'd expect to see it on ivy. I'd probably follow AnniDs advice and not put it in green waste or compost bin, and disinfect your tools afterwards.
  • I've never seen anything like that. I would be tempted to ask the neighbour exactly what they used to poison it as it's clearly stone dead. I would also do as others suggest and try to avoid it coming into contact with skin.
