to make them cost less to run. You can turn them on and off, but it's more inefficient. Which is to say, it's more inefficient for a gas boiler as well as a heat pump.

Nope, not true. I am a signed up, badge wearing environmentalist. I am not a 'do gooder'. Heat pumps are perfectly good at heating. The bad press is put around by people who sell gas or who install boilers.

I agree with you about hidden charges and poor infrastructure for EVs.

I'm inclined to agree with you @ColinA. They've had decades to get a proper green alternative in place, with systems that work throughout the bulk of the country. Obviously, there are lots of areas where it simply isn't straightforward [plenty up here] but there's too much knee jerk nonsense which simply isn't feasible.
Electric cars are smoke and mirrors IMO.

Vote winning propositions much of the time, with no thought as to what happens now, let alone years down the line.  :/

I have a diesel car, would never be able to afford electric even if I wanted one. They aren't free from pollution. Said neighbour lives in a very rural area, with limited electric capacity generated anyway

China has a flooded market of sub-£10k electric cars now. 250 mile range, 8 year battery warranty. Fairly dull city cars mostly but that's where the pollution and space problems are worse so it makes sense there.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Of course they are building fossil fuel power stations by the day. Even £10k is not possible for us. Next week we're spending the pension pot on solar, special deal via our local council. Hubby has a little petrol city car,but we have 2 dogs. The plan was to part exchange and get another estate,he was a motor vehicle tech, knew which had the recalls, problems, expensive parts to fail, tried for 3 years to get another,no luck

Hang on while I get my soapbox from under the stairs... The energy companies can treat us like this because they are (foreign) capitalist organisations. And just before you grumble , every one of those who voted for Mrs. Thatcher is to blame. So check your voting history before you complain now.
And while I am at it, it IS true that many older houses will have problems with heat pumps. The pipe bore is incompatible so the whole system will need to be replaced.

Thank you. I feel better now.

Not just water, but most of our water is supplied by foreign owned companies, and we don't even have a choice who to use.
