Moving bay tree from pot to ground

I am thinking to plant this laurel (about 2 metres inc pot) in the garden. It is now indoors only because I am doing some work on the balcony where it sat for the last 18 years.
Would it be better off in shade but sheltered, or in a sunny position but exposed to Luxembourgish winter winds? What would you do? Big sentimental attachment to it.

I'd err on the side of caution and avoid those winter winds by planting in the shaded sheltered position.  They are quite happy in shade - I have two, one which gets early afternoon sun and one which only gets about an hour's sun in the morning.  They are both sheltered by a fence and doing both doing equally well.  One of them was previously in a pot and started to suffer from leaf drop and powdery mildew - it's now much happier in the ground!
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.
