To plant or not to plant?

borgadrborgadr Posts: 718
I just received an order of Japanese Anemones, and there's a lot of fresh new leaves which I wasn't expecting this early in the year (they were ordered as potted plants but I was expecting no growth).

I understand they're fully hardy, but with all this growth I guess they must have been grown under cover.  Would I be better off keeping them in the greenhouse for now and planting out later in spring? Or would you say fine to plant them out now?

  • I think they will be fine outside. Even if the top will be damage by frost they will regrow from the roots. My Japanese anemones have already some green leaves coming up.
If you don’t want to take any risks, you can keep them in the greenhouse if it’s unheated for a few days and then plant them. Or you can email the company and ask them about where they’ve kept the plants.

Mine have quite a lot of new growth too. I was surprised, this early in the year. I think if yours get knocked back by cold, they should recover fine.

Thanks @Fire and @pitter-patter, I guess they're pretty tough plants. I'll get them in the ground this weekend
