I have never had much luck with seeds, do you have to use any particular type of soil?

Depends on the seed @Meomye, but any well drained, low nutrient medium is ideal for germinating seed will generally do. Once germinated and growing on, it's easier.
At this time of year, any MPC with some grit or Perlite added is ideal.
The biggest mistake most people make is overwatering  :)

Thanks @Fairygirl I think the perlite is my missing ingredient, although I have often used horticultural grit is that any good?

That should be fine. Anything 'grainy'.  It's just to open up the soil part of the medium, and allow water to drain, as well as reducing nutrients at this time of year  :)

I’m off to sow some dahlia seeds and possibly some spinach today.
    Tomorrow is another day

@Meomye - I'll just qualify my post re sowing mediums, and say that - I've just sown a few sweet peas earlier than usual, and they would be an example of a plant that doesn't need the same drainage. They actually need some moisture to get going.
I've got mine in deep pots [4 seeds to each] for their roots, and the bulk of the pot is filled with a sturdy MPC, with a thick layer of grittier stuff on top. The seeds are in contact with both layers.
I use takeaway coffee cups [my daughter buys me one every so often] as they have the depth that a standard 3 inch pot doesn't have. They're quite sturdy, and I often get two 'usages' from them  :)

This morning I've sow some Rudbeckia "Marmalade".

I've been checking on my seeds sown earlier this week and my peas and sweet peas have all come up as well as the Swan River Daisy.

I'll be running out of space soon!

  • All my tomato seeds are now in (Brandywine, bloody butcher, tigrella and Nimbus) plus Marconi pepper, lettuce, sp onion, various herbs and some trailing carnation.
Been a good day away from the scary world.
    Beautiful North Wales - hiraeth
  • It was a lovely afternoon here in Shropshire - I have sown Ammi Majus, Cleome 'Violet Queen', Rudbeckia seeds free from Gardeners World and Dahlia 'Bishop's Children'! Other half - who is in charge of veg - has sown chillies, peppers and planted out shallot sets. It really feels as if Spring is on the way - though I admit we could have snow at any time , so should be cautious!
