Forgotten bulbs! Plant them now?

ErgatesErgates Posts: 2,953
Just found two packs of daffodil and muscari bulbs fallen down behind the cupboard. They seem to feel ok, not soft or damp, or very shrivelled. I’m thinking that the best place for them is in the ground somewhere, even though it’s so late to plant them?

Yes - they won't do anything if they're left. More likely to rot or dry out  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • The latest I've ever planted daffs is mid Jan and they did flower albeit slightly later.
As @Fairygirl says, they will not last another 7 or 8 months sitting around. Just don't let  the bulbs see the calendar :D
  • Yes, the vast majority of bulbs should be planted (at least into a pot) as soon as you have (or find!) them.  Do this even if it's the 'wrong' time of the year according to the planting instructions.  Bulbs dry-out and deteriorate from the moment they are lifted in the conditions normally found in a house/shed, so the sooner you plant them, the better.  Late planted bulbs will often still flower that same year (usually later than normal) but will sort themselves out by next year. :)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Thanks! It’s stopped raining, and the sun is out, so might get that done while the ground is a bit softer.
Wrote that first sentence earlier! No, I didn’t get out! Will try tomorrow.
Thanks for all the reassurances and advice.
  • I had a similar issue towards the end of January last year, and things turned out very well, all things considered  Definitely worth planting them and see what happens!
  • What’s the worst that could happen, daffs in July? You are not alone, as I posted in curmudgeons corner, I bought a couple of bargain Giant alliums today and put them in the ground, we will see what happens.
