Think I would have to jump on the Nigella bandwagon .It could be a bit early but who knows these days with global warming.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

I've got larkspur that look like that self seeded in the garden at the moment, could that be it?

You could try gently thinning them out and plant a few nearby. Nigella hates to be moved so that might be a clue.
