Protecting the greenhouse in future storms?

I've not been brave enough yet to assess the full damage to the greenhouses, and how far the panes have been flung. Hopefully the local hardware shop won't have sold out before we get our replacement panes order in.

It has got me thinking - are there ways I could make the greenhouses more stormproof in future? More clips? Tape? Wrap it in a big tarp before each storm?
Any thoughts welcome...

I have a polycarbonate greenhouse it lost two roof panels and a wall panel in this storm.  Most of the replacement panels had been sold out yesterday by the time I got to the store but luckily I got what I need.  I've patched it for now as we have more strong winds coming and it's impossible to replace in such weather! When I do I'll be using gorilla glue silicone and reinforced with gorilla glue duck tape. Good luck work yours 👍

I used to lose one or two glass panes a year until I bought a whole load of the wire clips . Now every pane literally has clips all the way up each edge. Haven't lost a pane in years since I did that.

  • Yes. That is what I have had to do. Lots of wire clips around each pane. I checked my glass greenhouse yesterday and it is still intact thank goodness. Nothing went walkabouts and nothing was damaged. Very lucky. I am now waiting for the next lot of weather to arrive, it is blowing hard again and there is more rain.

As a veteran of storm damaged greenhouses I can advise that most damage comes from flying debris so make sure nothing will blow about or fall over near the glass. Extra clips for the glass and make sure the glass can't flex inwards if there's missing seals or things like that. Make sure bracings are tight and make sure that glass isn't touching the frame anywhere otherwise wind rock can flex the frame and shatter the glass. Plants make the best windbreak so a good hedge will help filter wind and slow the speed.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

I looked at a clear greenhouse self adhesive tape in a GC lately (while looking at other stuff). Would it work if you criss-crossed the panes with that I wonder?
