Madonna lilies are planted shallowly, noses just below the surface, and do indeed develop a tuft of leaves which can often overwinter. Are you certain they are lilium candidum, @SueAtoo? Could they be lilium regale?
Hmm. I thought they were candidum because they grow spaced singly up the stem rather than in a cluster at the top and are about 6'. They are beautiful anyway.
Plants do behave differently in different environments. I love my Madonna lilies, (am thankful that they grow!) but here they only get to about 5 ft, usually less. I like other lilies too but there's a freshness and simplicity about Madonna lilies that makes them special, plus the lighter, sweeter scent. Enjoy yours, @SueAtoo, and good luck with dividing them, it will be worth it.
